Senior Scams – This Year’s Highlights
No one is safe from scammers, but Seniors are particularly popular targets. Here are a few of this year’s scams that were particularly aimed at seniors.
Medicare Rebate Check Scam
If you’re expecting a $250 Medicare rebate check beware of scammers calling and pretending to be connected to the Medicare program. They claim they need to verify your personal information in order for you to receive your check, but they’re really trying to steal your identity.

Grandparent Scam
Scammers are taking advantage of the love for a grandchild by using fear as their main tactic. Posing as the victim’s grandchild, they telephone with a desperate plea for money to bail them out of a jam, usually in another country like Canada.

Reverse Mortgage Fraud
Reverse mortgages have increased more than 1300 percent since 1999, creating significant opportunities for fraud. Thieves recruit seniors through ads, local churches, and investment seminars. There are a number of schemes, but the most common in Equity Theft.

Phony FDIC Failed Bank Notice
With so many banks failing it’s easy to believe that yours could be one of them. Beware of an email from the FDIC that looks like an official bank failure notice. It’s really an attempt to rob your bank account.
